Suspected terrorists have abducted an unspecified number of traders along the Kaduna-Birnin Gwari Road while also carrying out deadly attacks in Jalingo, the Taraba State capital.
In the first incident, gunmen attacked a businesswoman in the Mayo Dasa area at midnight on Friday, December 6, 2024. The Taraba State Police Command spokesperson, Abdullahi Usman, confirmed the event to newsmen.
According to Usman, the attackers forcibly entered the compound by breaking the windows of the house with machetes. “She was reading in her room, preparing for an examination, when they suddenly opened fire on her, shooting her in the back. The bullet exited through her stomach,” he stated.
Surprisingly, the gunmen neither abducted any occupants of the house nor stole any valuables.
A second, similar attack occurred in the Jerbanbur area of Jalingo, where the gunmen opened fire on a clergyman. Once again, no abductions or thefts were reported.
Tragically, both victims succumbed to their injuries while receiving medical treatment at the hospital.
The Taraba Police Command described the attacks as unusual, as such perpetrators often kidnap victims and demand ransom. A discreet investigation is now underway to identify and apprehend those responsible for these heinous crimes.
While condoling with the victims' families, Usman urged them to find solace in faith, assuring the public that law enforcement will do everything possible to bring the perpetrators to justice.
