Taraba State's youth organizations have collectively decided to withdraw from the nationwide protest set for August 1, 2024. This decision was announced during a special meeting in Jalingo organized by the former acting governor under the theme "No to Protest, Yes to Progress."
Leaders from various youth groups articulated their reasons for opting out of the protest. Barrister Gusto Kwanchi, Secretary of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Taraba State chapter, stated that despite the current challenges faced by Nigerian youths and citizens, they prefer to find more constructive ways to communicate their grievances to the government rather than opposing their elders.
Barrister Kwanchi praised Governor Dr. Agbu Kefas for his significant contributions, such as the free education policy and the halving of tertiary institution fees, while also calling for more youth empowerment initiatives to ease ongoing hardships.
Dr. Jinadu G. Yawe of the APC Youth Vanguard highlighted the Local Government Autonomy granted by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration as a key reason for their decision, noting that it demonstrated the government's commitment to addressing national issues.
Hon. Emmanuel George, a former NYCN chairman in Taraba State, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the visible efforts by both Federal and State Governments to address youth concerns, including the impactful policies of Local Government Autonomy and free education.
Representatives from the National Union of Taraba State Students (NUTASS), the Students Union Government of Taraba State University Jalingo, the Jalingo Football Association, and various women's groups also confirmed their withdrawal from the protest, urging the government to continue enacting policies that benefit the populace.
HRH Alhaji Tukur Abba Tukur, the Galadima Muri, advised against participating in the protest and encouraged support for President Tinubu's and Governor Kefas's agendas, assuring that the government is working to address public grievances.
Alhaji Sani Abubakar Danladi, the program's convener and former Senator of Taraba North, urged patience with President Tinubu and highlighted the administration's efforts to resolve national challenges. He commended Governor Agbu Kefas for his inclusive governance and assured that the concerns of the youth would be communicated to the president for appropriate action.
