An Amawbia Chief Magistrates' Court has sentenced two men, Philip Avatus and Pius Dickson, to seven years imprisonment each for stealing iron rods valued at ₦1.1 million.

Avatus and Dickson, both hailing from Taraba, pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy, theft, and malicious damage. Chief Magistrate Mike Anyadiegwu, in his judgment, sentenced the duo to seven years in prison, noting their admission of guilt and remorse. The sentences will run concurrently.


The prosecutor, Inspector Innocent Agu, informed the court that the convicts committed the offenses on July 24 along the Amawbia-Nise road in Awka. Agu stated that Avatus and Dickson had damaged, cut, and stolen 120 pieces of 12mm iron rods intended for the construction of drainage on the Amawbia-Nise road.

These actions contravened Sections 495(a), 380(b), and 415 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 36, Vol. II, Revised Laws of Anambra, as amended.
