A two-day stakeholders’ meeting on family planning in Taraba State has concluded with a unanimous call for the state government to prioritize and ensure the timely release of funds dedicated to reproductive health services. The delay in fund disbursement, stakeholders warn, threatens the progress of family planning initiatives and undermines efforts to promote public health and socioeconomic development.  

The meeting, held at the Taraba AIDS Control Agency (TACA) conference hall, was organized by The Challenge Initiative (TCI) in collaboration with the Taraba State Primary Health Care Development Agency (TSPHCDA). It brought together key partners, media representatives, ministry officials, and other relevant organizations to discuss obstacles and identify solutions for improving access to family planning services.  

Participants emphasized the critical role of effective funding in reducing unintended pregnancies, improving maternal health, and fostering socioeconomic growth. They expressed concern over the government’s alleged failure to release funds despite the establishment of an annual budget line for family planning several years ago.  

Stakeholders also stressed the importance of transparency and accountability in the allocation and utilization of family planning funds. Proposals were made to establish mechanisms for tracking and reporting fund usage to ensure resources are effectively managed. The media was urged to play an active role in monitoring budget implementation and advocating for the timely release of allocated funds, which could prevent disruptions in service delivery.  

Recognizing the value of collaboration, participants called for stronger partnerships with relevant organizations to support family planning programs during periods of funding delays. They highlighted how such partnerships could mitigate the adverse effects of inconsistent government funding.  

Despite years of advocacy and the establishment of a dedicated budget line, stakeholders expressed frustration over the continued absence of financial support for family planning initiatives. They called on the Taraba State Government to adhere to budget timelines and take immediate steps to ensure the success of reproductive health programs.  

The meeting concluded with a unified plea for sustainable funding practices, emphasizing that investments in family planning are essential for public health, economic development, and the well-being of families across Taraba State.
