Taraba State and AFDB to Create Agro-Processing Zones to Improve Food Security

The Taraba State government has teamed up with the African Development Bank (AFDB) to establish State Agro-Processing Zones (SAPZ) in the state. This partnership aims to boost the state's economy, promote development, and create job opportunities for over 2000 unemployed youths.

Prof. Nicholas Namessan, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, made this announcement during a visit to the Chief of Mambilla, Alhaji Shehu Baju, and the Aku Uka of Wukari, HRM, Ishaku Adda Ali in Wukari.

He explained that establishing Agro-processing zones in three senatorial zones of the state would benefit farmers and the agricultural sector, as the state's fertile land is suitable for various agricultural activities.

"The State Agro-Processing Zones program aims to provide jobs for over 2000 youths and women, enhance household income, create employment opportunities in rural agricultural communities, especially for youths and women, and improve food security and nutrition in Nigeria," he stated.

Alhaji Shuaibu Bello, the team leader of the AFDB and Agricultural consortium group, mentioned that the consortium comprises reputable companies from China, India, South Africa, and others. They plan to cultivate 1000 hectares of land in Wukari, Karim Lamido, Lau, and Sardauna Local Government Areas.

Bello emphasized that the partnership will focus on collaboration in agricultural production, including sugar processing, milk processing, rice, yam, cocoa, and maize production. This signifies a shared commitment to advancing these key sectors for the benefit of Taraba and Nigeria as a whole.
