A Taraba State High Court in Jalingo presided over by Justice Nuhu Adi, has issued a judgment directing the Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC) to pay N800,000 as damages for an illegal electricity disconnection to Dr. Atando Dauda Agbu of Taraba State University, Jalingo.

In the lawsuit (No: TRSJ/111/2023) between Dr. Atando Dauda Agbu and YEDC, the plaintiff sought a declaration from the court that the disconnection of his residence without prior notice was unlawful. Dr. Agbu had reported an abnormal reading in his prepaid electricity meter in December 2021, and lodged a formal complaint, but received no response.

Despite applying for a new meter and following up, the electricity supply was disconnected on August 7, 2023, without statutory notice.

Justice Nuhu Adi, in delivering the judgment, sided with the plaintiff, declaring the disconnection unlawful. The court awarded damages of N600,000 against the defendants (YEDC), directing immediate reconnection of the electricity supply to the plaintiff. Additionally, the court ordered the defendants to pay N200,000 as costs incurred by the plaintiff in pursuing the case.
