Dr Shekarau Angyu Early Life:

Dr. Shekarau Angyu Masa Ibi, Kuvyo II, stands out today as one of Nigeria' s most foremost traditional rulers. He was born under the reign of the 18th Aku Uka, precisely on the 18th of April, 1937. He grew and evolve as the most revered contemporary leader and King of the famous Jukun Kingdom as the 24th Aku Uka of Wukari.


For 45 years he reigneth and guided his people until he peacefully joined his ancestors on the 9th of October 2021.

Dr Shekarau Agyu Educational Background:

He was educated in the culture and traditions of the Jukuns before he was enrolled into the Wukari Native Authority Elementary School in 1950, proceeded to the prestigious Sudan United Mission (SUM) owned Senior Primary School at Lupwe- Takum, now located in Ussa LGA of Taraba State.


While in Ussa, he distinguished himself in Arithmetic and Agriculture and to the admiration of his teachers. As credible royal sources have indicated, he never for once showed off about his royal background while growing up.

Dr Shekarau Agyu Civil Service Experience:

Royal influences were indeed most outstanding and positive in moulding the life, character and attitude of this ' fountain of divine kingship' as a young man and as a fully blown up adult.



His working life was also dotted by a number of remarkable achievements. From 1958 to 1963 He worked as civil servant, rising from Mail Officer of Wukari Native Authority to Transport Officer of the Northern Nigeria Ministry of Animal Health.

Dr Shekarau Agyu later proceeded to the Ministry of Works where he closely assisted Amb Jolly Tanko Yusuf in the pursuit of one of Sardauna' s most successful political outings- the Plebiscite conducted in the Northern Cameroon, which consequently saw that portion of Cameroon successfully becoming part of Nigeria.


Following a strong recommendation in 1963, he joined Mallam Ibrahim Sangari Usman, who was then appointed Chairman of the Electricity Corporation of Nigeria (ECN) with its headquarters in Lagos where he worked and lived until first military 1966 coup.

Dr Shekarau Agyu Business Experience:

It was from this point, that Mallam Ibrahim Sangari Usman, his former boss, decided that the young Shekarau Angyu Masa Ibi, should deploy his vast experience, versatility and his outstanding sense of dedication in the world of business.

He joined TEXACO Oil as Distributor. He worked at Kaduna and later in Makurdi where he rose to the position of a Dealer and later Sales Manager. Within this period of 1966 to 1976, Mr. Shekarau Angyu Masa- Ibi, deployed his experience and skills to massively expand TEXACO operations.



By this time, Mr. Shekarau Angyu Masa- Ibi had been noted and recognized as the colossus that engineered the consolidation of TEXACO operations in the zone.

His Coronation and Life as Aku- Uka:

In 1976, through the special grace of God Almighty, Mr. Shekarau Angyu Masa- Ibi was made the 24th Aku- Uka of the Jukun Kingdom, succeeding Malam Adda Ali.

Barely a year after ascending to the throne, the Aku- Uka, was recognized as a strategic pillar of the Gongola State Council of Chiefs. This recognition made the Governor to appoint him the Deputy Chairman of the Gongola State Council of Chiefs.


Having further recognized the special historical position of the Aku Uka as one of the oldest traditional institutions in the federation, the stool was upgraded to a first class status in 1982 by the administration of Governor of Gongola State, Late Alhaji Abubakar Barde.

Following the creation of Taraba State in 1991, the then Military Administrator, Navy Captain Ambrose Afolahan, on the 4th of April, appointed the Aku- Uka as the Acting Chairman of the Taraba State Council of Chiefs.



Shortly after, on the 4th of April 1996, the Aku Uka was appointed substantive Chairman of the same council by the Military Administrator, Col Yohanna Mamman Dickson.

The Aku- Uka served in this capacity for 25 years promoting harmonious living and peaceful coexistence amongst its diversely rich ethnic nationalities.



Public Service, Achievements and Honours:

The then, President Shehu Shagari, in 1981, appointed Aku- Uka Shekarau Angyu Masa- Ibi Kuvyo II of Wukari as the Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, in Kwara State, Nigeria. The Aku- Uka was similarly appointed the Chancellor of Federal University of Technology, Owerri, in 2001.


In 2015, President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, appointed him as the pioneer Chancellor of the Federal University Dutse. The incumbent government of President Muhammadu Buhari also appointed the Aku- Uka as Chancellor of the Federal University, Lafia on 8th July, 2021.

In addition to all these honors bestowed on the Aku- Uka, the following awards stand distinct for notice:

• Honorary Doctor of Letters (Honoris causa), conferred by the University of Ilorin, 9th Nov. 1991

• Induction into the UNILORIN Hall of Fame by the UNILORIN Alumni Association, 26th Aug. 1995

• Honorary Doctorate Degree [Honoris causa], Federal University of Technology, Owerri, 7th Dec. 2002


• Commander of the Order of the Niger, CON, conferred by President Olusegun Obasanjo, 2000

• Honorary Doctor of Letters degree (Honoriscausa) of the Federal University, Dutse, 2016

• Honorary Doctor of Letters degree (Honoriscausa) of the Federal University, Wukari, 2017

He also enjoyed several honorary appointments as Patron, Life Patron Grand Patron of so many Nongovernmental, professional, and community organizations




Aku- Uka Family Life:

His Royal Majesty has always led an exemplary family life by the Jukun tradition and culture of polygamy. He had married a total of 13 women in his lifetime.


Out of these wives, two are deceased. His marriages were blessed with 68 children. Sixty-one of them are still alive and engaged in lawful pursuits in different parts of the world and as good ambassadors of the Jukun race and the Bagua dynasty.





Aku- Uka Departure to Puja:

On 10th October 2021, the Wukari Traditional Council announced to the world that His Royal Majesty Dr. Shekarau Angyu Masa- Ibi Kuvyo II, has peacefully departed to join his ancestors at Puja.


He was said to have joined his ancestors on Saturday, 9th October 2021 after a brief illness
