The Tiv community has expressed lack of confidence in the commission of Inquiry set to look into the TIV/Jukun Crisis in the state, Rhapsodi Affos Blog e reporter who was at the siting reports.
Counsel to the TIV community, Barr. Sabastine Nkor (SAN) while speaking to newsmen after the Court session stated below
“We are withdrawing because we don't have confidence in the commission, because right from the instrument point of setting the commission to the time of point of reference, the TIV people have been profound, isolated & exempted because the commission of Inquiry is supposed to name the parties but it only named the TIV people & its neighbors” that is discriminatory contrary to section 2-4 of the Constitution”.
“It is also a ground towards breaching the fundamental human right of free hearing of the TIV people, we have pointedly told them we don't have confidence in the composition of the commission but they overruled us, and also, there's a pending case at the federal high court in Abuja seeking to enforce the fundamental right of the TIV people and so we won't be reappearing here again”
When asked if opting out is the best option hence the commission was set to bring lasting peace between the warring parties, he said
“According to the laws of commission of Inquiry of Taraba state, all parties are supposed to be named but the inquiry only named TIV and others, meaning TIV are the troublesome people”
When asked what next will he do after withdrawing, he simply said “Wait and see”.
Counsel to the Jukun community, Barr. Abdul Ibrahim said his clients are peace loving and also tolerative and they're here to find lasting solutions to put an end to the killings between his clients and the TIVs
The chairman of the commission, Hon. Justice Kumai Bayang Aka’ah earlier said a TIV group representing 8Million TIVs filed a case in high court to stop the commission from sitting.
Justice Kumai said the commission is meant for fact finding and recommendations on lasting peace and thus the members of commission are not rubber-stamp to name anyones
has adjourned to Wednesday 19th for submission of MOU.
