The Bauchi State House of Assembly has passed a resolution calling on the state government to demolish all houses and other structures erected on waterways across the state.
The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Abubakar Y Suleiman (Ningi Central Constituency) who disclosed the resolution during the plenary after the ad-hoc committee on the recent flood presented its report.

Suleiman said the House resolved that the state government should properly enforce the existing town planning laws without fear or favour.

“According to the findings of the House committee chaired by Hon. Bakoji Aliyu Bobbo, (Chiroma Constituency), 61,954 houses were destroyed across the state, 56,266 farmlands destroyed, 45 roads/culverts were washed away, 26 bridges were cut off, 228 wells were destroyed, one dispensary was destroyed, two schools and one market were destroyed and 64 lives were lost. The committee estimated the total cost of the damages at N4,862,471,203,” he said.

The speaker added that the government should demolish all houses and structures erected on waterways as the National Hydrological Agency had warned that Bauchi is one of the states prone to perennial flooding during the rainy season.
It urged the government to direct BASEPA and other relevant agencies to take legal action against anyone found dumping refuse in the drainage.
