Contrary to rife speculation that the Federal University, Wukari was shut on account on the lingering pogrom between the Tiv and Jukun ethnic groups in Taraba State, the vice chancellor, Prof. Abubakar Musa Kundiri, has dismissed the claim.

Academic activities in the institution had been brought to an abrupt end, as students protested against the alleged abduction of their colleagues by unknown hoodlums along the Wukari-Katisna-Ala highway last Tuesday.
The administrator said the closure became necessary to ensure the security of the students.
He said that the ivory tower would be re-opened once normalcy returns.
The students have, on the strength of the circular, been ordered to vacate campus on or before noon today.

Besides, the state police command corroborated the learning institution.
Its spokesman, DSP David Misal, said: “From the records we have on ground, the decision of the school authorities to close down the university has nothing to do with the Tiv and Jukun crisis.
“But it was as a result of the kidnapping of some students of the institution along the Wukari-Katsina-Ala Road.”
Meanwhile, the Benue State government has begun the evacuation of its 812 indigenes studying at the university.
The Commissioner for Education, Prof. Dennis Ityavyar, said Deputy Governor Benson Abounu had dispatched 15 buses to ferry the students to safety.
He added that the Samuel Ortom administration had equally made provision to assist the evacuated indigenes in getting to their homes.
