Whether we like it or not, VeryDarkMan (VDM) has undeniably emerged as one of the most loved young Nigerians - perhaps even across Africa. His admirers span diverse ethnic groups, demographics, and religions. He has earned the trust of many Nigerians, to the extent that they entrust him with not only their support but also their resources.

Like every human being, VDM has his flaws - only his are more pronounced due to the nature of his public presence and the bold manner in which he addresses issues.

While I sometimes feel he takes things to the extreme, we cannot deny that he wields significant influence, and his followers are not bought-they are organic. He speaks up for the average Nigerian in ways that very few people have the courage to do.

Why Are VDM’s Followers and the Public Agitated?

It’s simple.

While some may argue that he "gave himself up" by posting videos while still in the bank, the real source of public outrage lies in the manner of his arrest.

According to a press release by Barr. Deju Adeneju, VDM was allegedly blindfolded, beaten, and then taken away in a questionable manner.

1. VDM represents hope.
   To many Nigerians, he is a symbol of courage-some even see him as a "savior." So, what do you expect when someone so widely admired is arrested without any official explanation?

2. The arrest location raised eyebrows.
  He was allegedly arrested at GTBank. 

According to eyewitness accounts and the legal release, he was locked inside the bank for nearly ten minutes before being whisked away. This suggests there may have been prior coordination between the bank and those who carried out the arrest.

3. No official statement.
   As of the time of writing, there has been no official press release from either GTBank or the EFCC-three days after the incident. This silence has only fueled public suspicion and anger.

The Consequences

GTBank might not collapse over this, but they cannot ignore the reputational damage and the ongoing wave of withdrawals tied to the incident.

Some people may try to mock those withdrawing their money, but they likely underestimate the long-term PR damage this has caused the bank.

Banks need numbers. They need people. And people are driven by trust.

My  Final Thoughts

The sooner the anti-graft agency issues an official press statement, the better. Transparency will help calm the storm and uphold the integrity of the process.

Detaining someone who is this widely loved, without clear communication does not speak well for our democracy.

Let’s be honest: most people rarely apply logic when someone they love or detest is involved.
