The kingmakers and members of the traditional council of the Ichen Chiefdom in Kurmi Local Government Area, Taraba State, have rejected the appointment of retired Justice Emmanuel Dodo as their traditional ruler.

Chief Titus Nwunuji Tukura, a kingmaker and council member, voiced the community’s disapproval at a media briefing in Jalingo. Tukura declared the appointment illegal and stated that any actions taken by Justice Dodo as ruler would be considered invalid.

Speaking on behalf of the Ichen people, Tukura urged the government to allow the kingmakers to choose their leader following their customs and traditions.

The chieftaincy struggle began after the passing of HRH Mr. Samuila Maiwuya, the late Tii'echa of Ichen, on July 2, 2020. Following his burial, the Ichen Traditional Council, alongside elders and stakeholders, met with then-Governor Darius Dickson Ishaku, seeking permission to begin the selection process for a new ruler.

The process was delayed despite the kingmakers' anticipation for the governor's approval. On December 17, 2020, an election was scheduled but later postponed due to security concerns. This led to the state government conducting interviews for the aspirants, a method that violated the community's traditional process.

The imposition of Justice Dodo heightened tensions, prompting the stakeholders to seek legal redress. Though the courts issued an order restraining the state government from appointing a new ruler, the judgment remained unenforced, sparking further controversy.

Tukura expressed confidence that Governor Agbu Kefas, known for his discipline and integrity, would resolve the issue. He reiterated that the Ichen people are peaceful but will resist any unconstitutional efforts to impose leadership.
