Mohammed Umar, the council chairman of Sardauna local government council in Taraba State, has implemented a curfew in Gembu, the administrative headquarters of the council.
According to reports, the curfew will be enforced from 8 pm to 5 am starting Monday, in response to the arrest and subsequent death of a suspect, Haliru Waziri, allegedly at the hands of the Civil Defence in the area. This incident has stirred up tension.
In a statement issued to journalists on Monday by the chairman's Special Adviser on Media, Marvelous Heli, the decision to impose the curfew aims to restore peace amid the turmoil following the suspect's death. The timing of the curfew is set to accommodate Ramadan fasting for Muslim residents.
The council chairman has reassured the council's residents of his administration's commitment to ensuring their safety, regardless of their ethnic, religious, or political affiliations.
Earlier, the Civil Defence claimed that the suspect was involved in robbery activities, causing distress to the community.
As of the latest report, heavily armed security personnel have been deployed to Gembu to prevent further unrest.
