In a recent operation conducted between April 27 and April 29, 2024, troops belonging to the 6th Brigade/Sector 3 of Operation WHIRL STROKE successfully dismantled a terrorist stronghold and rescued individuals held captive in Taraba State.
The Nigerian Army, in a statement, disclosed that the mission aimed to neutralize the looming threat posed by insurgents inciting terror and disorder within Taraba State.
"Troops hailing from the 93rd Battalion Sub-Sector 3B OPWS, stationed in Fikyu, promptly responded to reports of suspected terrorists engaging in sporadic gunfire within the Pukun area of Fikyu in Ussa Local Government Area," the statement read.
Engaging the insurgents with decisive force, the troops compelled their retreat. Subsequent scouring of the area led to the discovery of an AK-47 magazine containing 10 rounds of 7.62MM special ammunition.
Additionally, troops deployed at Kufai Amadu and Kasuwan Haske, in collaboration with forces from Sub-Sector 1A OPWS, acted upon intelligence pinpointing the terrorist hideout in Vingir Village of Katsina-Ala Local Government Area, Benue State.
Encountering the insurgents, the troops engaged in a fierce exchange, prompting the terrorists to scatter in disarray. Among the apprehended individuals was a suspected kidnapper identified as Dogo Manu, found in possession of two Tecno mobile phones and ₦40,000.
A subsequent search of their encampment yielded the recovery of an AK-47 rifle. Furthermore, the troops successfully secured the release of Dr. James Raphael and his son, who had been held captive in Gbeji, Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State.
In a separate incident, troops from the 20th Model Battalion Sub-Sector 3A OPWS, conducting nocturnal patrols around Gangdanbana and Kwanar Maliki in Bali Local Government Area on April 27, 2024, apprehended one Junaidu Isiaka with four sacks suspected to contain cannabis sativa.
The suspect, who had been on the radar of security agencies for his involvement in illicit drug trade and supplying terrorists and other criminal elements within the region, was taken into custody.
The operation underscores the unwavering commitment and determination of the troops in combating terrorism and all forms of criminality while prioritizing the safety and security of Nigerian citizens.
