Senate Transmits 35 Constitution Amendment Bills For President’s Assent

Nigerian Senate has resolved to transmit for assent by President Muhammadu Buhari, thirty-five out of the forty-four bills passed on the fifth constitution amendment exercise.

Nine out of the 36 states of Nigeria were yet to send their own resolution on the items identified. The states are; Gombe, Jigawa, Kebbi, Oyo, Plateau, Sokoto, Taraba, Kwara and Zamfara.

Senate however confirmed that the delay by these states didn’t amount to rejection of the bills, insisting that the constitution amendment exercise remained a work in progress.

Senate also on Tuesday, urged the CBN to extend till July 31st this year, its deadline on the circulation of old naira notes.

Senate’s resolution followed a motion by senator Suleiman Sadiq who insisted that many Nigerians could loose their savings if the January dealine remains, because over 40% of the citizenry still have the old notes.

Senate also on Tuesday, confirmed the appointment of seven Nigerians to serve as members of the ICPC.

They were: Retired Justice Adamu Bello, & Hannatu Muhammed representing north west zone, Mrs. Olubukola Balogun representing south west zone, while Mr. Obiora Samuel represents the south east zone. Others are; Dr. Abdullahi Saidu, & Prince Dauda Yahaya, representing the north central zone, & the south south zone is represented by Dr. Grace Chinyere.

Meanwhile, Senate has read for the second time, three bills while two others were passed, after they were read for the third time on Tuesday.

The two bills that were passed were; the federal high court amendment bill 2023, which sought to increase the number of judges.
