The Rotary Club International, on Saturday, reiterated commitment to work assiduously toward reducing maternal and perinatal mortality, as well as morbidity across the country.


The organization that made the pledged while donating medical equipment worth millions of Naira to the Taraba state government, said it pledged to reduce maternally and morbidity will be executed through Rotary Reproductive Maternal and Child Health ( RMCH).


Presenting the items which include family planning commodities and consumables, among others, the National Coordinator, Rotary Club International, Professor Emmanuel Adedolapo, warned against the sales of the items.


Speaking through the organization’s state representative for RMCH, Rotarian Esther Hassan, Professor Adedolapo said that the equipment being donated is not to be sold but should be given free of charge to beneficiaries in need of them.


Mashing on the need for the equipment to be used for the people and kept in the family planning unit, the organization was optimistic that the state Reproductive Health and Family Planning Coordinators will assist in monitoring the judicious use of the equipment and effective use as well as counseling on various contraceptives donated.


The organization also vowed not to cease carrying the state along especially in the area of family planning, saying that it dreams of training doctors and nurses on Obstetrics Quality Assurance (OQA) and family planning for selected doctors and nurses across secondary and tertiary facilities in the state, have yielded positive results.


Receiving the equipment on behalf of the state government, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Innocent Vakkai, said the items will go a long way to reduce maternal and morbidity rates in the state.


Vakkai expressed sadness that “Africa carried the height burden of maternal morbidity and family planning commodities, which he said is very important.


According to the Commissioner, the state and the country at large, will only be happy when maternal and morbidity rate is drastically reduced, hence the need for all and sundries to access family planning facilities.
