The Justice Christopher Awubra Judicial Panel on Restitution of Victims of Police Brutality and Other Security Agencies in Taraba State has concluded its sitting after receiving 34 petitions with no compensation for any victim.

Out of the 34 petitions received, six were withdrawn or struck out, while 28 were successfully heard.

The Nigeria Police Force had 26 petitions against it, while the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps had two; the Nigerian Army had three.

The petitions consisted of eight murder cases and 26 others bordering on torture, illegal arrest, extortion, and detention.

The Secretary of the panel, Elihu Ekanah, told journalists at the end of the sittings that most of the petitions would be determined by their strengths.


“Only the NSCDC never defaulted from honoring summons. The Army never showed, while the police started appearing but later stopped,” he said.

Governor Darius Ishaku had in October last year inaugurated the panel with two months' ultimatum to complete its assignment.
