Two persons lost their lives when a windstorm swept over five towns in Gassol local government area of Taraba State. It was gathered that over 500 houses, including schools and churches, were destroyed by the windstorm described as the worst in recent years.
The windstorm, which occurred at about 5pm Sunday, affected Sabongida town, Tella, Takai, Tisol and Tella towns all in Gassol local government area. Apart from structures destroyed, foodstuff, animals and household items worth millions of Naira were also destroyed by the windstorm.
Most of the victims are now sleeping in the open as relief materials is yet to be provided to them. One of the victims, Alhaji Muktar Ajuji Sabongida, told newsmen that all the houses in Sabongida were affected by the windstorm. He said his private school, his house and that of his children were destroyed by the windstorm.
According to him, a woman was killed at the Catholic Church in the town when the room she was living collapsed on her. It is learnt that another person also died in Takai.
He said the destruction was the worse in recent years and appealed to Taraba state government to assist the victims
