An object, suspected to be explosive device, yesterday, exploded at Glory Land High School, Azugwu, Ebonyi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, chopping off the left hand of a Senior Secondary Student (SS2) identified simply as Chibuike.

The device, which exploded during lunch break hour, left many students of the school injured. The incident occurred at about 11 a.m. causing panic within the school and its vicinity.
Chibuike was rushed to the emergency unit of the Alex-Ekwueme Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, while others with minor injuries were treated around the area.

When our correspondent visited the school at about 2:30 p.m. The gate was under lock and key. No student was seen. Our correspondent, however, saw some students of the school, returning to their homes and had a chat with them.
The students confirmed the incident, adding that Chibuike was playing with the device when it exploded.

One of them said: “I was in the school when the explosion occurred. I can’t tell what it was. “But I saw Chibuike playing with the thing before it exploded. It’s like he came to school with it. “The thing chopped off his left hand. He has been taken to the Hospital.”

The Ebonyi State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Loveth Odah, confirmed the incident.
She, however, said she was yet to get official report from the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Eke-Aba Police Station on the incident.

Odah added: “The DPO has gone there, but he has not reported to us. So we are still waiting for him.”
