Sequel to the recent trends of kidnapping in the country and Taraba state in specific, The Taraba state house of assembly is set to impose death penalties for kidnappers.

The Taraba State Government may soon join the growing number of states such as Edo, Ogun and Anambra that have imposed death sentence on kidnappers.

A bill which is being sponsored by the Speaker of the Taraba State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abel Peter Diah put it that any person, who kidnaps, abducts, details or captures or takes another person by any means or tricks his or her with intent to demand ransom or do anything against his/her will commits an offence, and liable on conviction to death sentence.

Attempt to kidnap or abduct persons was also criminalised under the bill and it was suggested that such a person is liable to on conviction to twenty years imprisonment without an option of fine.

Arranging for kidnap was also criminalise in the bill. It stated that any person who puts himself whether overtly or covertly to another person to be kidnapped, abducted or seized for the purpose of extracting money, ransom or for any other reason commits an offence and is liable on conviction to imprisonment for life without an option of fine.

For harbouring kidnapped persons, any person who knowingly or willingly allows or permits his premises, building or place belonging or occupied by him which he has control over for purposes of keeping a kidnapped person commits and offence and is liable on conviction to fourteen years imprisonment without an option of fine.
