just like nigerian leaders played the game of denial until thousands end up in early grave in zamfara and other northwestern states, bandits have again shifted focus to sokoto state, and we’re still wishing away the evil. hiding under the claim that the disgruntled elements will soon stop their atrocities, leaders let these bandits creep into our communities, and kill in tens, scores and eventually hundreds.
Taraba state governor calls for urgent adoption of State, Local govt Police
Over the weekend, bandits struck five villages in Sokoto, launching simultaneous attacks that claimed over 50 lives. The affected local governments are Rabah and Isa, and the victims were buried by the state governor, Governor Aminu Tambuwal on Sunday.

A villager, Abdullahi Maiwada, who witnessed the attack on Sapiru village, explained that “The bandits stormed Sapiru village, under the Tozai Ward in the Isa Local Government Area at about 5 pm on more than 50 motorcycles on Saturday.
“They entered the town shooting sporadically. Eighteen people were killed instantly, while another seven later died. Fourteen of the victims are currently receiving treatment at the general hospital.

“Another two, who are in critical condition, have been moved to the Usman Dan Fodiyo University Teaching Hospital in Sokoto while another one is receiving treatment at the Orthopedic Hospital in Wamakko.”
Also speaking on the incident, another villager from Tsage, said. “In the Rabah Local Government, where Tambuwal attended the burial rites, 25 people from Kalfu, Tsage, Rakonni and Geeri villages were killed in another attack.”
Just as the state was mourning the incident, the West African Action Network on Small Arms (WAANSA-Nigeria) on Sunday said that more than 3,641 people were killed in six northeastern states Benue, Taraba, Nasarawa, Plateau Kaduna and Zamfara in recent times.

The president of WAANSA-Nigeria, Mrs Josephine Habba, explained that, “The negative impact of poor control of arms in Nigeria cannot be overemphasised; more than 3,641 people were killed in Benue, Taraba, Plateau, Nasarawa, Kaduna, and Zamfara states between January 2016 and October 2018 due to violent clashes between herders and members of the farming communities; 57 per cent of them were killed in 2018 alone.

Bandits attacked one village in my local government called saturu killed 20 people on sarturday. And about 5 month bandits closed a way from Sokoto to isa an hour plus journey now people from isa follow Sabon birni, goronyo road to reach their state capital.

“These clashes have been a fight to control and access resources including water, land and pasture. According to Amnesty International, the Nigerian government has the constitutional responsibility to protect lives and property and where this has not worked as expected; this promotes the demand and supply of small arms and light weapons.”
She said that aside from deaths resulting from gun violence, hundreds of thousands of persons had been displaced internally.
“In Benue State alone, 483,692 persons have been displaced, 56.24 per cent of the displaced population are children; 22.59 per cent are women, while 21.17 per cent are men.

Obviously, the bandits are not even thinking of stopping anytime soon. Instead, they spread their operations to other states as soon as security agents concentrate on a particular state. That’s exactly why the fire is raging this much in Sokoto at the moment.
But despair and confusion is not what we need at the moment, but a swift plan to tame the criminals before we lose more people to these mindless killings. Governor Tambuwal has to act now, as the slightest delay could cost us grave losses.
