Representatives of branches of the Nigerian Union
of Local Government Employees (NULGE) in the
Northeast staged a rally yesterday in Jalingo,
Taraba State capital, demanding local government
council autonomy.
Hundreds of members of the union from six states
in the Northeast went through major streets in
Jalingo and the state House of Assembly carrying
placards stating their case.
The National President of NULGE, Comrade
Ibraheem Khaleel, while addressing members of
the union at the trade fair complex in Jalingo,
explained that the rally was to press for total
autonomy for council areas in the country.
He said local councils mismanaged funds meant
for the development of rural areas as a result of
controling influence of state governments.
