By Akpeji Charles The owners of land occupied by the federal university in Wukari local government of Taraba state could no longer hold their peace as they dragged the state government to court over non payment of compensation. Citing other councils of the state where owners of lands where public institutions are established are duly compensated, the land owners said the ” unduly delay tactics” in compensating them could no longer be tolerated. The said federal institution was one of the institutions established by the immediate past administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan. Speaking to Naija247 News through their Counsel’, Shagnah Pwamaddi, government “non-chalant attitude towards the poor land owners” according to the land owners “called for this present action.” According to him the land owners had earlier in 2014 dragged the government to court claiming compensation but later withdrew following government agreement to compensate them like their counterparts in Jalingo, Bali, Ussa and Lau local governments whom as stated by him “had since been compensated for their lands. “The government in June, 2016 through the court pleaded to settle with the land owners but all series of attempt made to enable the government settle with the farmers failed and all the failures were at the instant of the government which is not ready to pay compensation to the farmers.” ” The court” he said “had granted opportunities to the government but the government deliberately frustrated the process of settling with the farmers. This case has been prolong for three years now. The farmers are fed up and tired.” To the farmers as made known by him “the court is their last hope on this issue since the government has abandoned them by refusing to give them their due as required by the law.” Stressing that the land owners are citizens of Taraba State like the people of Jalingo, Ball, Usa and Lau whom were since compensated over the government acquisition of their lands for the construction of public institutions like school of Nursing, Federal and State Polytechnics in Bali, Dangote farms and Kashimbilla dams “What is good for the goose” he said “is good for the gander.” Noting that government “Ill action”has herald untold hardship on the land owners as their sources of livelihoods have been carted away “compensation to other communities and the neglect of Wukari land owners” as stated by him “is the greatest injustice by the government.” The land owners as plaintiff as made known by him have vowed to proceed to hearing at the next adjourned date which according to him had been slated for today the 7th of February'” to secure their claim.”
