Armed kidnappers numbering about 15 have sacked Chul community of Gassol Local Government Area of Taraba State on Tuesday night.
The
kidnappers, it was gathered,stormed the community midnight in an
attempt to abduct large scale farmers and wealthy members of the
community for ransom.
Daily Trust further
gathered that the kidnappers on entering the village, fired several
shots into the air to scare the villagers.
A
resident of the community, Malam Sani Chul, told our reporter in a
telephone interview that the kidnappers stormed the village and went
from house to house
searching for wealthy persons.
He said they abducted an elderly woman, Hajiya Baba, while other members of the community ran into the bush.
Malam Sani said that vigilantes in the village engaged the abductors for about an hour and chased them out of the village.
“We
are in contact with the abductors and negotiating for ransom in order
to secure the release of the elderly woman,” they said.
The
caretaker chairman of Gassol Local Government, Alhaji Yahuza Yaya’u,
confirmed the incident, adding that the divisional police office in the
area led a team of policemen to the affected community.
He
appealed to the state government to beef up security in the area to
tackle activities of kidnapers and other criminals now terrorizing the
community.
“Kidnappers and other criminals now
target large scale farmers and wealthy individuals and abduct them or
their family for ransom,” the chairman said.
When contacted,however, the police spokesman in Taraba command, DSP David Misel, said he was not aware of the incident..
