The Taraba state Director of Sports, Yossie Daniel Ayuba, has
reiterated the readiness of athletes in the state to participate at the forthcoming national youth games scheduled to take place in Kwara State this month.
The Director was speaking in an interview with Taravoices correspondent in Jalingo.
Yossie Daniel said the athletes are still in open camp undergoing rigorous training with proper supervision from their coaches.
The Director decried the lateness in the approval by the state government, saying already, other states are on their way to acclimatize before the commencement of the Youth games.
She stated that the council is waiting for fund from state government,
promising that as soon as approval is granted and funds released,
necessary steps would be taking to
tackle issues that concern the
players to ensure optimal performance during the festival.
She explained that the essence of the National Youth games is to identify talents at the grassroots for future National and international competitions.
On the implications of not making it to the games, the Sports Director noted that “the state would be fined 5million naira apart from a ban for two editions, running for two years”.
The director said the fine would be paid to the organizers, Ministry of Youth and Sports Development in Abuja which is not the best.
She also lamented that the Minister of Sports, Solomon Dalung went
round some States in the country to sensitizing them about the games and
wondered why he vehemently refuted to visit the state.
She called on parents and guardian to allow their children to take
parts in sporting activities in q bid to nurture them and increase the
numbers of athletes in the state.
