The coast is now clear for the conduct of local
government elections in Taraba state, as the House
of Assembly has passed two bills into Law. They
are The Taraba state Local Government
(Amendment No 10) Law, 2016, and The Taraba
state Independent Electoral Commission
(Amendment No 4) Law, 2016.

The new Laws seek to amend the Taraba state Local
Government Law, 2000 and the Taraba state Electoral
Commission Law, 2002, to reflect a two-year tenure for
local councils in the state from the former three in
the principal laws.

Rising from an emergency sitting presided over by
Speaker, Abel Peter Diah, the House had received
the report of the House Committee on Local
Government and Chieftaincy Affairs headed by
Mark Useni following a public hearing on the Bill.
The two Bills were considered by the House and
received the backing of the House after they have
passed through the constitutional requirement and
the necessary procedures.

The Speaker, Abel Peter Diah, thanked the
members for their patience and steadfastness
despite the recess they were into.
He then declared that with the passage of the two
bills into Law, the government was now free to
conduct local council elections in the state and
directed the Clerk to communicate the Governor
on the new development.
